EXHIBITED:20 Jun – 12 Jul 1997,8+8-1:Selected Paintings by 15 Contemporary Artists,Schoeni Art Gallery,Hong Kong1998,8+8-1:Selected Paintings by 15 Contemporary Artists,Connaught Brown Gallery,London1999,Chinese Girl Series— Qi Zhilong Solo Exhibition,Schoeni Art Gallery,Hong KongThis work is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity issued by Schoeni Art Gallery,Hong KongIt was November 1992 when Schoeni first arrived at my studio.His emergence thoroughly ended our hardships.These hardships were most unfortunate in that we had no source of income and no opportunity to borrow money.If the situation had continued for even a couple more months,I would have had to give up.The path of my life would have been completely different thereafter.The greatest beneficiary of the arrival of Schoeni was perhaps my child,who was just three years old at the time and ready to go to kindergarten.Although the payment we received from Schoeni was not a huge sum back then,it was enough to immediately relieve us from total poverty.My cooperation with Schoeni lasted over ten years.I will not claim that our cooperation was wrinkle free,as during those years conflicts and confrontations did arise.However,he was always capable of transforming negativity into a sense of positive motivation,thus allowing the artists and the art gallery to move forward as one entity.─Qi Zhi LongAfter graduating from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1987,Qi Zhilong came to the Yuanmingyuan art village under the encouragement of Li Xianting,and held his first solo exhibition at Schoeni Art Gallery in 1994.The director of the Gallery Wen Shaoli deemed the colorful cultural images of contemporary China under Qi Zhilong’s brush very representative.This exhibition opened the door to the international stage for Qi Zhilong.He was later invited to hold solo exhibitions at Galerie Urs Meile in Switzerland and Schlager Gallery in Germany.Furthermore,since 2007,he has held grand personal retrospective exhibitions at Municipal Art Gallery of Thessaloniki,Greece,National Gallery of Indonesia in Jakarta,which have been well-attended by the art community.Among many themes of Qi Zhilong’s artwork,Li Xianting thought that the one where he“genuinely formed his own style” is “Chinese Girl”.In the Chinese Girls Series No.25,Qi Zhilong used bright colors,trying to create a“lively world that is charming and sexy”,in contrast to the repressive political connotation in the girl.The artist tries to trace back to an era that has passed away and he tries to record the madness,sigh and emptiness of that era.His work reflects his concern over social realities
